Nhu Quynh – Chuyen Hoa Tigon

Composer: Anh Bang
Poet: T.T.Kh
English Title: Story of the Tigon Flower
Translated By: Gigi

One autumn evening just before twilight arrived
Still innocent, I gathered all the fallen flowers
Basked in the moonlight, my hair dyed into its color
I waited for the figure of my lover to appear with all his love

He often ran his fingers across strands of my hair
Often sighed every time a smile reached my lips
He once said, "Those flowers are like a shattered heart.
I'm worried that would be the future of our relationship."

I remembered the words he once said to me
Ever since that autumn evening from long ago
Now that I finally understood the meaning of those words
Our relationship had been destroyed by my hands

If he knew that I had already married another
Would sadness reach his heart, shattering it, or not?
Would he think of those shattered flowers from long ago?
Flowers that resemble a broken heart dyed in crimson blood.

Translator's Notes: Anh Bang took 4 verses from a famous poem "Hai Sac Hoa Tigon" (Two Colors of Tigon Flower) by T.T.Kh and composed this song. The poem itself is actually 11 verses long with 4 lines per verse and is based on the poet's own tragic love story. To this day, the poet's identity was never revealed.

Khanh Ly- Hat Cho Nguoi Nam Xuong

Composer: Trinh Cong Son
English Title: A Serenade for the Dead
Translated By: Mikki

Here you lay to rest after you once passed by
You used to revel in this life
You used to fly high in the flush sky
Then you lay to rest, no friends, no one
No one, everyday; there's no one for eternity
To lullaby you to a deep sleep,
Rain seasons came through this cementery only to bring birds!

You lay to rest and let hatred fall into oblivion
Sent each other off on a sad day
The land embraced, escorted you to return to your origin
From that day, in the vast sky is missing you
Like the bird's wings forsook the forest,
Like the heart forsook love
In this place once,
Seeing your arrival, my sorrows were resigned to speak in vain!

Your friends are still here, do you know that?
Your lover is still here, do you miss her?
The garden is still green, the sun is still rising
When your shadow, like a bird's wings, descended.

Which region of sky you have already flown through?
What still remains here are these infinite mornings
A lover then became forgotten, friends became separated
Oh the months and years, many human footprints also faded to dust.

You lay to rest, like that voyage once
A child from the past has found his way back home
The deserted land sealed off with the promise to return
People in the city, in one day, already recalled your name
Some tomorrow mornings, in war
Many bloody corpses will appear
I plead for that person who just lay to rest
To see the reflection of heaven at the end of the boundless sky.

English Title: Sad City
Translated by: Gigi

Which city was it? Do you remember?
The place where we both found our time of peace
Which city was it where we walked until we were tired?
Across the curvy roads with pine trees stationed at every corner
With our hands intertwined, we basked in the afternoon sun
Sunlight gently kissed your lips, coloring them pink
Your eyes were sad amidst the evening mist
I thought they looked even more beautiful...

Which morning was it? Do you remember?
Sunday was the day we spent our time together
The sad city laid still as the mist spreads
People grew silent, buried beneath the mist
I kneeled beside you in a corner of the church
Hearing our prayers, I weaved a future for our love
If God blesses us, he will let us be together forever

From then on, our love began to fade because of distance
From then on, you became someone's wife in distant place
Silently, I regretted this life of mine
While you cried your eyes out in vain
I returned to gather our memories in search of happiness

A sad city... filled with regrets
Where the evening wind blows, chilling my soul
And on that one road where leaves would fall
Without you, even the rocks feel sorrow
Without you, the streets feel so desolate
The sound of the evening bell slowly echoes across
Bidding farewell to the person who's forgetting the mountainous slopes
The person who's forgetting this love.

Translator's Note: The city that the composer is referring to is Da Lat in Vietnam. Once called “Little Paris” by the French colonists who founded it, Da Lat is now known for its beautiful mountain scenery and delightfully cool mountain weather. Due to previous French colonization, Da Lat is filled with European-styled mansions and Catholic churches built by the French. The composer wrote this song after visiting Da Lat.

English Title: Silently Singing Myself to Sleep
Translated by: Gigi

Whose lips are still fragrant? Let me bask my love there.
Whose hair is still bright? Let me feel a bit of its naturalness.
Whose heart still possesses peace? I divulge in my life.
Please call out my name.

When love has flown away, the heart wallows in deserted streets.
On top of every drop of blood, a bird stands in silence.
When returning amidst winter, hands reach out belatedly.
I'll just wait for dawn to come.

Please wait for dawn to come. Why is life so quiet and empty?
Like harvested rice fields, like deserted forests and mountains.
Someone returns to look at his shadow rested on a silent, white wall.

Which streets are cheerful? Let me pass by there one day.
Which strands of hair float within tiny pieces of memories?
There's nothing. There's no one left. I drift within life.
I'm not waiting. I'm not waiting for anybody.

Return to where you came from. I'll wander for the rest of my life.
If there are still incense left, I'll burn them completely this evening.
Please let me rest within a cradle. I silently sing myself to sleep.
Please let me sleep under arches of trees.

Quang Dung – Ta

Composer: Quoc Dung
Poet: Pham Ngoc
English Title: I
Translated By: Gigi

I'm drunken with sorrow
I'm laughing hysterically with the pain
I'm searching for the source
I'm escaping towards the open sea

I'm standing in front of the sky's entrance
I'm calling out to my lover of a hundred years
I'm inflicted with pain within a broken dream
I'm letting loose the words of remorse

I'm sinking into the river of my consciousness
I'm extending my hand out to beckon
The road on this world is dim and distant
I have yet to find my path of return

We lost each other yesterday
We search for each other today
I'm a different person every day
I'm a bird that has lost its way.

Quang Dung – Tinh Nho

Composer: Trinh Cong Son
English Title: Love's Yearning
Translated By: Gigi

Love seemed to be forgotten, like a heart's struggle to remain frozen
You seemed to be so far away, yet you return so suddenly
Oh, that dress which flutters freely, has driven the evening sky away
Like every flow of water washing away the gloomy days

Love seemed to have disappeared, but love is still brimming
You seemed to have departed, but your presence still lingers around here
Every gentle footsteps that have walked across your life and made their mark
Like every pebble dropping into the heart of a vast ocean

When the pain hasn't lengthen, then love has a hint of sunlight
When the pain has risen fully, then love has already become so immense
One person returns to the summit, while the other returns to the abyss
Allowing love to sink deeper, like the birds' shadows across the mountain pass

Love seemed to wither within us, but love is still bustling
You seemed to have forgotten everything, but you are still filled with longing
Every one of those hestitant fingers that brought this love closer
Like boisterous winds by the shore bringing an end to a wandering life

You seemed to be someone of the past, but then you suddenly return
Love seemed to exist remotely, but love is actually infinite
Oh, that grieving heart has known happiness once again for a moment
Like a distant shore that just experienced drought is already submerged in rain.

Translator's Notes: I found another video of this song and the video contains a comment written by Trinh Cong Son. I decided to translate it and place it here since it seems to suit the song and will possibly allow us into the mind and heart of Trinh Cong Son, even if only for little bit.

"I will always remember and adore the age of youth, which is an age of passionate love. While I do adore the wonderful years of my life, I also cherish that piece of my life that I have already lost."
- Trinh Cong Son
