Comment: Tropical Snow is Vietnamese drama with a story very similar to a Cinderella fairy tale. With every fairy tale comes the romance as well as the villain, and Tropical Snow has both elements. I think this is a great drama that's enjoyable for everyone. There are some parts that I do find unbelievable but then again, even the title, Tropical Snow, suggests that. Everyone knows that a place with a tropical climate will never have snow, pretty much like how a girl from the slums in Sai Gon is not likely to become Cinderella. But in this drama presents the impossible making us think that it could be possible. There are flaws in this drama, especially a few episodes before the ending. A few episodes before ending is where I thought it gotten a little draggy and annoying. I admit, I used the fast forward button when watching the last few episodes. Other than that, this drama is a great fairy-tale-like drama. Sure, there are some parts that are romantic and mushy, but hey, it's a fairy tale after all.

Comment: When I first heard of this movie, I thought to myself, "Oh, the poor children..." However, when I watched the movie I was shockingly surprised at the conditions the four children have to live in. The movie moves at a pace that isn't meant to surprised viewers though, but it is meant to inform. No judgments can be made when the viewer is simply the observer. Nobody Knows deals with family and responsibilities, advocating that all children needs to feel wanted and loved. It also deals with sibling love as it shows how Akira takes care of the groceries and financial duties while Kyoko is doing the laundry. Each of them care for their two siblings who are too young to understand the situation. Then, it also deals with adolescence when presenting Akira as a 12-year-old boy who is in the midst of puberty, yet having to carry on the responsibilities of an adult. Nobody Knows is a movie that will bring tears to your eyes and make you realize that there are also children in the world who suffers from the same situation. The facts are direct and in your face; there aren't any beating around the bush. The transformation of the children is apparent, and the transformation of their home is apparent from orderly to a great big mess. I find no flaws in this movie because everything concludes in the ending in a bittersweet, yet realistic way. I recommend this movie to everyone because we can all learn something from this movie: parenthood, responsibilities, life, friendship, and love.

Jumong (2007)

A.K.A.: The Book of Three Han: The Chapter of Jumong
Korean Title: 삼한지-주몽 편 (Samhanji-Jumong Pyeon)
Genre: Drama, Romance, Period
Starring: Song Il Gook, Han Hye Jin, Kim Seung Soo, Hu Joon Ho, Oh Yun Soo
Screenwriters: Jung Hyung Soo and Choi Wan Kyu
Director: Lee Joo Hwan
Episodes: 81

The story begins in 108 BC, during a time when Gojoseon succumbs to the Han nation after a treacherous battle. The time was bleak for Korea having to suffer under the Han without the voice or will to fight back. It is during this time that Jumong was born, who will be Bu Yeo's prince. However, Jumong and his mother soon falls to persecution by the Queen and the powerful advisor of the King. Through trials and tribulations, love, and friendship, Jumong transforms into a hero, as recorded in history, the first King of the King of Goguryeo. His journey to reach it is one with sacrifices and losses.

Rating: B- (Good)

Comment: Jumong is one of those epic dramas that starts out great, reaches its peak, and just slowly dies down until the viewer is left bored and uninterested. Even though Jumong is based on recored history, 90% of the drama is fiction. I enjoyed the drama but there were times when I felt so frustrated at the pace the drama was going and the many fillers in it. By the time I reached 50, I wished that it would all just end. The drama shouldn't be 81 episodes long. I'm sure with some wrapping up, less fillers, and so forth can bring this drama down to at most the 50 range. The plot in its simplest form is interesting but the way it is presented in the drama just kills it. The plot is stretched to amazing proportions just to fill in episodes. Also, I really didn't like the ending at all. With 81 episodes, I thought that the ending would have a "boom" sort of impact but in actuality, it was a little squeak. The ending did not make up for my effort of watching 81 episodes. If people don't mind the talk and no action, feel free to watch it. I will warn you, this drama is all talk and little action. Overall, Jumong is a "good" drama, but it can't be any more than that.
